Schooners: The Impact of the Economy on Restaurants

Last Friday afternoon I stopped by Schooner’s Restaurant in Hull to ask owner Jacquelyn Chase how business is going.

She said it’s been a tough winter, explaining many people chose to stay at home to try to make their money go further.

For her part, Jacquelyn said the cost of simply putting out a pizza has tripled in one year, due to the rising price of wheat and cheese, as well as the cost of keeping their pizza oven heated.

Jacquelyn’s husband is in charge of obtaining the seafood, which is one of the restaurant’s specialties. He has worked in the seafood field since he was 12, having once managed his aunt’s restaurant, Jake’s, another well-known seafood restaurant now owned by the O’Brien family.
